This impressive and majestic foyer, part of a 7-story brownstone (built in 1900) in Manhattan, was extensively damaged by water leakage. The plaster walls and plaster ceiling were crumbling away in many areas. Some of the plaster bas-relief figurines had even disappeared.

 

This was a challenging project! It is always difficult to repair and match any finish that you have not originally done yourself...We had to re-create the missing bas-relief using plaster of Paris, sculpting tools and trompe l'oeil painting. The background finish was an intricate parchment, which had numerous tones of ocher, terracotta and brown.

 

After weeks of tedious work, we married the new work to the old one, refinished the ivory bas-relief and ended up with an incredible result!

 

Our goal was achieved: The plaster walls and plaster ceiling looked like they had never been disturbed in 100 years!
